Blue Notes

Blue Notes is the PSUK Singing Group for Milton Keynes for the benefit of
those with Parkinson's Disease and other neurological disorders

Singing offers natural therapeutic benefits for many of the voice symptoms
associated with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and other neurological conditions.
Singing together with the Blue Notes is the focus for a group of people
with Parkinson's, and their partners, to share in a joyful activity and work
toward a common goal.

Milton Keynes joins the list of locations around the world where those with
PD can enjoy the benefits of singing, with or without previous singing
experience.  With breathing, stretching and posture activities, vocal
exercises, rhythm and movement, members of the Blue Notes will be
challenging some of the most serious voice symptoms of PD.

David Meek has been appointed as the Singing Leader for Blue Notes; he
works in the Milton Keynes community with a number of different musical
groups, individuals and organisations, including the Milton Keynes Music
Service, Adult Continuing Education and National Youth Music Camps.
David said “research shows that vocal exercise enhances voice volume in
people with PD; the presence of music & rhythm also improves movement.
Singing, especially in a group, can be both physically & spiritually uplifting.
We aren't trying to produce great singers but help the speech of those with
PD and focus on what they can do rather than what they can't”.
PD is a progressive disease which decreases many aspects of quality of life
inclusive of communication skills. Singing is not a miracle cure for
communication issues but it is part of the fight against the deterioration
process to ensure quality of life will remain intact for as long as possible.
Singing acts as a “mega-vitamin for the brain” as it generates a feel-good
factor with its' incredible endorphin rush. From a medical perspective,
singing out loud exercises the lungs and abdominal muscles; it also helps
to relax and invigorate. An extremely important aspect of the Blue Notes
will be the social interaction, which encompasses sharing, encouragement
and support for one another.
